Virtual Learning FAQ
Do students have to log in to "live" virtual sessions?
This is not a requirement for attendance, though some teachers may host live sessions for their classes.
Are teachers available for student assistance during the day? Yes, teachers are available during the regular school day to host live sessions, answer Schoology messages, emails, etc.
Why not just close the schools?
Because of the new legislation allowing for 15 virtual days, this unexpected election day was chosen to pilot a virtual learning day in Riverview. If the district exceeds its allotted forgiven days, the school year would have to be extended into the summer and the district would likely lose vital state funding. While we understand it could be an inconvenience for our families, we want to do a trial run to work out potential obstacles should we ever have to use this model in the future due to an emergency. Also, with a month's advance notice, we are hopeful that the plan will be able to be well executed. In addition, the upcoming 27 days typically have the most weather-related school closures, therefore balancing if we have additional days off between now and then is impossible to predict.
Why not shut down only the schools with polling locations?
This solution could be problematic if we exceed our forgiven days at those buildings going forward and since we have many families with students in multiple buildings, the decision was made to run the virtual pilot for all schools.
**The Riverview Early Childhood Learning Center (ECLC) will remain open for students in the GSRP, ECP, and Young 5's programs.
Does my student need to be on their device the entire school day?
No, there will be live options, but successful completion of the day’s learning will not require them to be on their device the entire day or for live meetings.
How will attendance be taken?
Student attendance will be taken by any of the following instances: student’s participating in a live meeting during the school day, interaction with staff via technology, and/or submission of any required assignments.
What if my student doesn't have a device?
Schools will have devices available for checkout. You will receive a brief survey from your teacher (elementary) to indicate technology needs.
What if I have a child at the ECLC (St. Cyprian Campus) in GSRP, ECP, and/or Young 5’s?
The ECLC will have a normal school day for students, and they will report per usual.
